Bone Age Assessment
Bone age assessment from hand radiographs is a commonly employed pediatric procedure. In order to help practitioners with this task, our lab has developed an automated analysis method using techniques that allow the direct implementation of the TW3 method.
In order to achieve that goal, hand radiographs are preprocessed using an elastic registration procedure. Next, a classification step is applied, and each bone is compared to a set of models corresponding to each of the development stages defined in the TW3 method without the need of a explicit bone segmentation or feature extraction.
Results obtained using our approach are accurate and robust, and statistical analyses indicates our bone age assessment lies within the range of inter-expert variability.
A web application for bone age assessment is available at the LPI here.
