LPI research on structural changes in COVID-19 persistent headache
The LPI, in collaboration with the Headache Unit of Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valladolid, has assessed structural gray matter and white matter changes in patients with persistent headache after the acute phase of COVID-19 in comparison with healthy controls and patients with episodic migraine (EM) and chronic migraine (CM).
Patients with persistent headache showed diverse changes in the white matter and gray matter structure compared to the other three groups. On the one hand, white matter changes evaluated through Diffusion Tensor Imaging parameters seemed to be associated with impairment of fiber bundles. On the other hand, gray matter changes and specific white matter modifications such as altered diffusion in the main direction seemed subtle and less pronounced than those identified in migraine, suggesting an intermediate state between normality and migraine.
